At Joshua’s Puzzle Connection, we know the weight of sharing an autism diagnosis with family and friends. You hope for support, understanding, maybe even love—but instead, you’re met with disbelief, dismissal, or hurtful words that linger in your heart.
If you’ve ever felt that sting, you’re not alone. We’ve been there too. And while these moments can be painful, we also see them as opportunities—to educate, to create change, and to open hearts that may not yet understand.
Here are some real responses families have heard when they shared their child’s autism diagnosis—along with the truth we want the world to know:
“Don’t let them label him.”
Autism isn’t a label. It’s a part of who he is. A diagnosis doesn’t limit him—it opens doors to the support, resources, and understanding he deserves.
“He has what? What is that?”
We get it—not everyone knows what autism is. But instead of responding with confusion, try asking with curiosity and care. “I’d love to learn more. Can you help me understand?” means everything to a parent who just wants to be heard.
“He doesn’t look autistic. Isn’t that like… duh?”
Autism doesn’t have a “look.” It’s not something you can see—it’s something you take the time to understand. Instead of questioning, try listening.
“Don’t claim it.”
Denying it won’t change it. Autism is not something to be ashamed of or hidden. Acceptance is the greatest gift we can give our children.
“Just pray on it.”
Faith is powerful, but autism isn’t something to be prayed away. God made him exactly as he is—perfect, worthy, and deserving of love and support.
“There’s nothing wrong with my grandson. You just need to talk to him more, take him out more.”
Autism is not caused by parenting, nor is it something that can be “fixed” with extra playdates. He experiences the world differently, and that’s okay.
“We don’t have this in our family. We’re all smart.”
Autism is not a measure of intelligence. Some of the brightest minds in history were autistic. Instead of denying it, let’s embrace his unique strengths.
“It’s just the vaccines. Try vitamins, tea, or this DVD.”
Please, let’s stop this harmful myth. Autism is not caused by vaccines. What truly helps is understanding, inclusion, and support—not false cures.
“Maybe he’s just shy. You were shy as a kid.”
Shyness and autism are not the same. He’s not just “quiet.” His brain processes the world in a different way. And that’s not wrong—it’s just different.
“He’s not autistic!”
Denying it doesn’t make it untrue. What helps is listening, learning, and loving him exactly as he is.
To Every Parent Who Has Felt Alone in This Journey…
We see you. We know the pain of these words. We know the heartbreak of wanting your child to be accepted for who they are, only to be met with rejection and misunderstanding.
But here’s what we also know—autism is not a tragedy. Ignorance is. And every time we choose education over frustration, patience over anger, and love over shame, we take one step closer to a world that truly sees our children for the incredible individuals they are.
So if you’ve ever heard these words and felt the sting, remember this: You are not alone. Your child is not broken. And you are doing an amazing job.
At Joshua’s Puzzle Connection, we’re here for you. Let’s rewrite the narrative—together.. Join us !
Join our team of volunteers and make a difference in your community. Whether you can give a few hours a week or a few hours a month, your time and skills are appreciated.
